Maintaining Saltwater Aquariums

The challenge of maintaining saltwater aquariums is often greater than freshwater aquariums. It is because the fish tanks are intended for marine fishes and invertebrates. In a saltwater aquarium, the ecosystem is more complex and so the aquarist should have more patience. Saltwater aquariums are widely available in acrylic and glass and these are usually sold together with mechanical filters and chemicals.

Aquarists should have separate requirements for hood, stand, and lighting. Some tanks even make use of heaters. Most of today’s saltwater aquariums can hold from 30-60 gallons but there are   life-sized aquariums found in industrial places.

The challenge of maintaining saltwater aquariums is that they require adequate care and maintenance. Oftentimes, the tank gets dirty because of changes in the quality of water. If this happens, you need to clean the fish tank.

The environmental condition inside the tank should be maintained for the fishes to thrive. The ecosystem should be maintained by putting only the appropriate fishes, invertebrates, corals, and other plants in the aquarium. The aquarist should   regularly monitor the alkalinity, oxygen levels, and the pH level. Saline levels should be 28 to 32 PPT while the specific gravity should be 1.020 to 1.024; you can use a hydrometer to determine these things. Monitoring these factors of the water quality can be a challenge of maintaining saltwater aquariums.

Live rocks can be added to the saltwater aquarium because it is inhabited by herbivores and detrivores. The latter feeds on the biological wastes in the tank and so the ecological balance is maintained; you can   put brittle stars, feather dusters, sea stars, and snails in the tank because they are harmless and act like scavengers.

You can house tropical fishes in your aquarium. Filters are now more developed and so it is easier to maintain the saltwater aquariums. You can get the refugium and hang-on filtration systems. These equipments can assist the mechanical and chemical filtration and the refugium aids the biological filtration.

Beginners will surely find it hard to deal with the challenge of maintaining saltwater aquariums. It would be great if they try the freshwater aquariums first. If they can get the hang of it, then they can already try saltwater aquariums. Experience is needed if you want to become a good aquarist who can enjoy the challenge of maintaining saltwater aquariums. This is a time consuming yet rewarding task because once you see marine life thrive in the aquariums, you will feel happy and contented.

With so many challenges, the aquarist should be prepared for it. He or she should be equipped with the right knowledge in order to take good care of the fishes and other marine life within the saltwater aquariums.
